What does "100% Italian meat" mean on a charcuterie product?
It indicates that the raw material (pork or beef) comes exclusively from Italian farms. It is not a regulated certification like PDO/PGI, but a producer's declaration traceable through the voluntary SQNZ labelling system or through supply-chain codes.
Are Italian meat and PDO the same thing?
No. A PDO product must be made according to a specification within a precise geographical area, but it may sometimes use meat of different provenance (e.g. some PDO products historically use meat from pigs born in other regions). "100% Italian" only guarantees the origin of the raw material, not the process or the area of processing.
How is the Italian origin of the meat in a product verified?
The label must indicate the country of birth, rearing and slaughter of the animals. For products certified IT-IT-IT (born, reared and slaughtered in Italy) the consumer has the guarantee of a fully Italian supply chain.
